A wooden beam is segmented and reassembled to form a cube. During reassembly, small pieces of the wood are cut away, or holes are drilled throughout the wood after assembly. The gaps left in the wood during this stage are then filled with resin. Next, the cube with its resin pattern is sculpted on the lathe, to produce a bowl.

Hence, the final shape of the pattern on the surface of each piece results from the meeting of the original two-dimensional pattern and the three-dimensional shape of the bowl.
